Salsa Dance Classes

Salsa is a fun and energetic Latin dance that combines Cuban styles like mambo, pachanga, and rumba with elements of American dances such as swing and tap. Developed by Puerto Rican and Cuban communities in New York during the late 1960s and early 1970s, Salsa has grown into exciting styles from around Latin America, including Cuban, Puerto Rican, Colombian, and New York Salsa. At Bailamor Dance in Canberra, our beginner-friendly Salsa classes make it easy to learn the rhythm, build confidence, and enjoy the joy of dancing from your very first step.

Salsa Beginner

Salsa Beginner introduces the fundamentals of On 1 Salsa, also known as LA Salsa, where dancers move on the first beat. This class focuses on basic footwork and simple turn patterns, making it an ideal starting point for beginners. With its linear patterns and timing, it’s easy to follow and builds a strong foundation for future levels. The class is open to all students with little or no previous Salsa experience and emphasizes learning the essentials in a fun and supportive environment.

Salsa Improver

Salsa Improver helps you deepen your understanding of foundational techniques, with a focus on rhythm, timing, and lead-and-follow dynamics. This class builds on your existing skills to create stronger connections with your partner and smoother, more fluid movement. You’ll also begin exploring deeper body movement, stylish shines, and more intricate patterns to add flair and confidence to your dancing.

Salsa Intermediate

Salsa Intermediate takes your dancing to the next level, helping you connect more deeply with the music while refining your technique. This class emphasizes rhythm, timing, and lead-and-follow skills, essential for smooth, creative, and expressive movement on the dance floor.

Bachata Dance Classes

Bachata is a social dance from the Dominican Republic, blending Cuban son, African rhythms, and bolero music. Today, Bachata has evolved into several styles, including Bachata Sensual, which became popular in Spain. Bachata Sensual combines dance and theatre, following clear lead-and-follow principles, with flowing circular movements, body waves, and expressive isolations and dips that interpret the music’s rhythm and emotion.

Bachata Beginner

Bachata Beginner introduces the fundamentals of Bachata, drawing from both Dominican and Sensual styles. Students will learn to dance on the beat and practice basic partner patterns in a social dance setting. This class focuses on building a strong foundation, making it an ideal starting point for anyone with little or no previous Bachata experience.

Bachata Improver

Bachata Improver builds on the basics by introducing variations of social dance patterns in both linear and circular styles. This level focuses on improving posture, technique, and body movement, while also introducing Dominican Bachata footwork syncopation to help students connect with the music and add flair to their dancing. Students can join this level after completing two terms of Bachata Beginner classes or an equivalent.

Bachata Intermediate

Bachata Intermediate takes your dancing to the next level by introducing the techniques and styling of Bachata Sensual. Students focus on connecting with the music and their partner through smooth body waves, circular movements, and expressive isolations. This level emphasizes fluidity, musicality, and subtle lead-and-follow skills, helping dancers add elegance and confidence to their social dancing. Students can join after completing Bachata Improver or an equivalent level.

Salsa & Bachata Shines Classes

Shines, or solo footwork, are an essential part of Latin dance, allowing dancers to express themselves, explore the music, and develop their own style. In these classes, you’ll focus on building rhythm, timing, and footwork patterns independently, which helps improve your technique and confidence both on your own and when dancing with a partner. Learning shines is not only fun—it’s a foundation for creativity, musicality, and personal expression in Salsa and Bachata.

Heels

This dynamic class helps dancers refine their technique, enhance their styling, and build confidence while dancing in high heels. Designed to complement the elegance and passion of Salsa and Bachata, the class focuses on mastering essential movements and exploring the expressive possibilities of dancing in heels. It’s ideal for intermediate to advanced dancers who are comfortable with the fundamentals and want to take their artistry, technique, and confidence to the next level. Beginners with basic Salsa or Bachata experience are also welcome if they’re ready for the exciting challenge of dancing in heels..

Jenny really cares about the development of her students and empowers their growth through teaching technical fundamentals, providing a supportive environment whilst balancing with some fun energy in each lesson. Jenny also takes on feedback from her students attentively and incorporates this to tailor the classes to the needs on her student’s development. It’s through Bailamor that I’ve developed my confidence to be able to perform my very first performance at Latin Tuesday, and I’m on my way to perform at the Sydney International Bachata Festival with an amazing group of ladies. If performances are not your thing, Bailamor also have other dance styles that you can use with your partner or for social dancing to meet friends. I don't always go out of my comfort zone and try to learn a new skill with a strong emphasis on partner work, but when I did, am glad it was with Bailamor Dance Canberra :D  I've learned from 3 excellent teachers, each with their own style of teaching such that anyone is sure to find a teacher they can learn effectively from.  All the nervous parts of dance like not knowing if you'll have a partner when you come on your own, or worrying that you'll sweat too much (you will to be clear) are taken care of in an easy manner such that there's 0 chance you'll feel awkward.  Maybe best of all, you'll be smiling through most of the class, and that is damn good for the soul =)

I've been teaching at Bailamor since day one, and before that, I had the privilege of learning from many of the amazing instructors here. The group of instructors has been part of the Canberra dance community for many years, and have all contributed to building a strong Latin dance scene in our city.

Our director, Jenny, is amazing. Her passion and focus is inspiring—she's constantly learning new material and technique from local and international artists, which ensures that we all keep learning and growing as dancers.

Jenny and her team are super friendly and passionate about dance.  It doesn’t matter if you have been dancing for years or have never danced before:  Their wealth of experience has a lot to offer you.
I came to Jenny very unsure with zero music or dance experience. Within a few months she and her team had ignited a passion for Latin dance I didn’t know I had, and I now enthusiastically attend regular social dances and even the occasional Latin Dance Festival.
